60 Days Before Medical School Contest

Congratulations! You are so close to your first day of medical school! I am sure there are hundreds of things running through your mind. You have done quite well and if you are too nervous to be proud of yourself in this moment, just know that there are people out there always cheering you on!

60 Days Before Medical School

Now that you know where you will spend the next couple of years, you have a few things that you need to see after before you settle down and chain yourself to that table in the special, quiet corner of the library. You’re going to be studying harder and with more intensity than you ever have before—so, get ready!

Before you crack open your copy of Netter’s Atlas of Human Anatomy or Grant’s Dissector, let me ask you some questions:

  • Are You Ready?
  • How will you pay for your medical education?
  • Did You Qualify for Any Scholarships or Grants?
  • What loans will you take out if you have bad credit and NO cosigner?
  • Where are you going to live? Living Alone or with Roommates?
  • Are You Taking Your Car? Pets? Kids?
  • If you have a family, have you discussed the new changes and challenges?
  • Have you mentioned that your “holidays/breaks” from here on out are virtually non-existent?
  • Are you studying this summer prior to the start of the semester?
  • What Subjects/Topics Will You Focus On?
  • Will You Toss or Donate Your MCAT Study Guides & Notes?
  • Are You Taking a Course Prior to the Start of the Semester?
  • Are you a returning first-year medical student? What will you do differently this year?

To commemorate this occasion, I want to also announce a contest! If you’re preparing for medical school or currently enrolled, what are some of the unique things that you have/had to do prior to the start of the semester? Do you have any recommendations for new medical students? The commentator will be randomly selected on July 10th, 2014 (Deadline extended: 06.30.14) and will receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card. Think about it, $50 off your first 3M Littmann or a new Keurig is just what you needed.

The best recommendation I have to give is: remember you DO NEED SLEEP! Even though the things you need to learn seem endless, you must get some rest otherwise you will dooze off mid study and not learn anything at all! Attached is a pic of me, slipping into a coma hours before my embriology final. Needless to say, that night my friends let me sleep for about two hours and then forced me to keep studying. Best of luck to the new med students!

I’ll be cleaning out my apartment and getting ready to move.

This will be my first year in med school, they had a whole list of things we had to do before starting. Taking a BLS course, designing a profile about ourselves in the school website for all the other med students to see, that sort of stuff. The most exciting thing more me was getting fitted for my white coat!
